Guide 01

01A Guide to Tennis Betting

Tennis is one of the most consistently bet sports in Australia, with matches on tour almost every day of the year. That schedule is why bookmakers keep tennis markets open late, and why the sport suits both casual match winners and people who enjoy working through a full week of tournaments. The four Grand Slams — the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open — anchor the season, with ATP and WTA tour events filling in between.

Most tennis bets start with the match winner, but the depth of the market is what makes the sport interesting. You can look at set handicaps, total games, set scores, and in some cases player-specific lines such as aces served or break points converted. Because tennis matches can swing quickly, the value is in checking recent form and surface preference before you commit, not in following a player's ranking alone.

Markets to know before you back a match

  • Match winner — the straight price on each player
  • Set handicap — one player starts the match with a head start or a deficit
  • Total games over/under — the combined games played in the match
  • Set winner — backing who takes a specific set of the match

02Popular Competitions to Bet On

Australian bettors gravitate toward a familiar set of competitions, and it shows in the depth of the markets. The biggest events carry the widest lines — more bet types, more in-play options, and prices that move as the picture develops.

AFL & NRL

State of Origin and the Sydney Derby headline the fixtures; weekly rounds keep the markets busy all season.

Tennis & Cricket

The Grand Slams, the BBL and Test cricket fill the summer with the deepest odds of the year.

Racing & Harness

A meeting runs somewhere in Australia on almost every day of the year.

Esports

League of Legends and Counter-Strike tournaments run year-round at the major bookmakers.

Football on grass

Soccer has its own strong calendar, from the A-League to the continental qualifiers, and keeps the season busy between the big codes.

Soccer balls and a player training

The calendar runs in layers: domestic codes in winter, summer ball sports, racing every day and the international tournaments that fill the gaps.

03Responsible Betting

Betting should stay entertainment. Set a session budget before you log in and treat it as the cost of the evening's sport, not as money you are hoping to grow. The tools below are free, they are provided by operators and national bodies, and they work whether you choose to use them or not. If any of them reads like a relief, that is a good moment to talk to someone — help in Australia is free and confidential, and the people on the other end of the line have done this before.

  • Set deposit, loss and session limits from your operator's responsible gambling menu
  • Switch on reality checks so the platform reminds you how long a session has run
  • BetStop — the national self-exclusion register for licensed Australian wagering operators
  • Lifeline 13 11 14 — 24/7 crisis support if things ever feel out of hand

National Gambling Helpline — 1800 858 858 · Gambling Help Online

Remember the basics: only stake what you can afford to lose, no outcome is guaranteed, and betting is not a way to recover money or build an income. If betting stops feeling like fun, the right move is to step back — and the people on the helpline can help you work out the next one.

04Singles, Accumulators and System Bets

Three structures cover most of what people bet in Australia, and understanding the difference between them is more useful than any single tip. A single is one selection. An accumulator — an acca — links several selections together, and every leg must win for the bet to pay, with the odds multiplying as you add legs. A system bet is the forgiving version of an acca: you nominate how many legs must win, and the stake is spread across the resulting combinations.

The trade-off is simple. Singles give the cleanest picture of what is happening. Accas compress small odds into a bigger number, but the chance of every leg holding up falls quickly as legs are added.

Single

  • One selection on one outcome
  • The odds are the price on that selection alone
  • The clearest way to track a call

Accumulator

  • Two or more linked selections
  • Every leg must win for the bet to pay
  • Odds multiply leg by leg as the bet grows

System

  • Combinations built from several selections
  • A set number of legs must win to cash
  • Stake is spread across the combinations

05Deposits and Withdrawals at Bookmakers

Money in and out of a betting account works differently from a bank account, and the first thing to check is how fast each step takes. Deposits are almost always immediate — the balance is available the moment the payment clears — while withdrawals run a longer queue and pass through identity checks before anything is paid out.

Australian bookmakers generally take POLi (online bank transfer) and debit cards for deposits, with bank transfer and e-wallet options at many operators. Withdrawals are usually paid to the method used for the deposit, and the first payout typically takes longer while verification runs. Read the operator's own payment terms before a big event — they set the rules, not the guide.

1

Register & Verify

Complete the account and pass the identity checks before your first withdrawal.

2

Choose a Method

POLi, debit card, e-wallet or bank transfer, depending on what the operator supports.

3

Deposit

Funds are usually credited straight away once the payment clears.

4

Withdraw

Request a payout to your deposit method; the first payout usually takes longer.

06A Guide to Betting on the Races

Race betting is the oldest form of wagering in Australia, and the market depth at the major meetings is unmatched. There are three main types of racing to understand — thoroughbred horse racing, greyhound racing and harness racing — and bookmakers add motor racing markets for the big track events. Each one runs its own calendar, its own fields and its own pricing style.

The bet types run deeper than in most sports. Win, place and each-way are the core, with exotics like the quinella and the trifecta, where the pool of stakes is shared among the winners. The same runner can be priced at a fixed-odds bookmaker and at a pool, and the difference matters when the field is large and the numbers move.

07Understanding the Different Bet Types

Every market at a bookmaker falls into one of a few families. The first family is the straightforward ones: match or game winner, next try or goal scorer, total points, and the like. They are priced directly, the meaning is clear, and they form the backbone of any bet slip.

The second family adds a layer: handicaps, over/under totals, special props and multi-leg bets. These give you more angles on the same event, but each added layer changes what you are actually predicting. A useful habit is to write out in plain English what each selection is saying before you place it — if you cannot say it in one sentence, you probably do not understand the bet yet.

The Basics

  • Match or game winner
  • Next try or goal scorer
  • Total points over/under
  • Player props — top scorer, try counts, stats

The Layered Markets

  • Asian handicap — one side starts with a margin
  • Over/under with a line set by the bookmaker
  • Special props — first try scorer, stat lines
  • Multi-leg bets — accas and systems

08A Guide to Cricket Betting

Cricket is the summer's game, and the bookmakers treat it that way. Test series, the One Day International window and the BBL carry the biggest cricket lines of the year, with match winner, series winner and tournament markets as the backbone.

The depth goes well beyond the match result. Session over/unders, wicket lines, top-batter and bowler props, boundary counts and player-versus-player markets all appear on the big matches. The format matters: Test cricket is a different proposition to a T20, and a price that looks generous in a T20 may carry a completely different risk profile in a five-day game.

Match WinnerThe straight price on either side of the game
Series WinnerBacking the team that takes the whole series
Top Batter / BowlerPlayer props on runs, wickets and key contributions
Session Over/UnderRuns scored in a period of the match, against a line

Guide 09

09Over/Under and Handicap Markets

Over/under markets ask you to predict a total — points, goals, runs, games — against a number the bookmaker sets, called the line. The bet does not care who wins; it only cares whether the combined result lands above or below that number. That makes the market useful on matches where one side is such a heavy favourite that the win price carries no information. Think of it like a timed race against a gate: only the finish matters, not who is leading.

Handicaps do the opposite: they even out a mismatch by giving one side a head start or a deficit. In Australian rules, an eight-point favourite is priced as if it were eight points behind at centre. Asian handicaps go further by using quarter-point lines, so the result can land exactly on the line and give a partial refund. Both markets are where bookmakers do most of their volume, which is exactly why the numbers shift through the day.

10Choosing the Right Online Bookmaker

There is no single best bookmaker for everyone; there is a right fit for the way you bet. Start with licensing: the operator should hold a licence from an Australian state or territory authority, and the licence details should be verifiable on the public register. Everything else is secondary to that check.

After that, the comparison comes down to a short list: the markets and prices offered on the sports you follow, how fast deposits and withdrawals run, how the support team actually behaves, what responsible gambling tools are built in, and what the terms behind any promotion actually say. A shortlist of two or three operators that pass the licensing check makes it easy to compare prices side by side before each big event.

1

Licence

Verify the operator on the state or territory racing and gaming authority's register.

2

Markets

Depth on the sports you actually follow, not just the headline events.

3

Payments

Deposit speed, withdrawal queues and the methods the operator supports.

4

Support

Response times and the hours when live chat is actually staffed.

5

RG Tools

Limits, reality checks and self-exclusion built into the account.

6

Terms

Read the full conditions behind any promotion before you rely on it.
